Rabies

First entry in the Israeli horror genre is an interesting subversion of the genre. It’s heavy on characterizations with quite an ensemble cast following a number of plots throughout the story. A very sharp wit. Worth watching.

The Caller

I quite enjoyed the twists and turns in this story. Plot sets an interesting dilemma for the protagonist. Characterizations are strong, certainly makes you feel a sense of loss as certain characters bit the big one. Well worth a watch!

Urban Explorers

Film of two halves I found. First half is a tight, tense, claustrophobic terror as teens investigate subterranean levels of Berlin looking for excitement. 2nd half is a disappointing mix of gore and horror. 1st half promised so much more than the 2nd half actually delivered. Shocks were delivered a plenty throughout. Good but could have been so much better.

Dale and Tucker Vs Evil

Very funny subversion of the stereotypes seen in horror films. the laughs roll in as the body count mounts. Nice inventive set pieces give off satisfying results as you recognize scenes it is trying to pastiche. To Horror films what Blazing Saddles is to Westerns. Watch this film!

The Glass Man

Interesting film, psychological thriller/horror about a man’s efforts to avoid the financial mess he finds himself in. Great performances all round led from the front by Andy Nyman keep things moving as the events take a turn for the worse in one long night.

The Holding

Great British flim of greed, jealousy and dark secrets against the idyllic backdrop of rural countryside life. Tension is built up slowly through the first half at such a pace that you really feel a sense of loss as things turn out not so rosy. The three female leads are very good with a decent script to back them up. Main guy looks like a slighty out of shape Gerard Butler, his performance is spot on in this film. An enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours.

Rogue River

Probably the flakiest excuse for a storyline I have ever come across. Plot holes galore but it was executed with enthusiasm. Some humorous moments but for me the gaps in the story interrupted enjoying the film. It was kinda all over the place but I suppose kidnapping, incest and rape and torture is a tall order.

Let the Right One In

Scandanavian entry into the Vampire genre is an intriguing story. The central character stands out strikingly with his pale complexion and blonde hair. He plays a troubled loner at school who begins an innocent friendship with disastrous consequences for those around him. It is quite poignant in a macabre way watching the dependency in friendship grow between the central characters. The remoteness and cold of the environment upon which the story is set really adds to the feeling of unease the viewer has throughout the story. This is a haunting tale certainly worth watching.

#Frightfest to provide surprise shock for Sunday evening

It seems that due to the unfortunate removal of A Serbian Film there was a rather large gap left in Frightfest’s listings for Sunday night. I came across this rather exciting announcement in their listings last night. I would personally love for it to be a showing of Tesis with intro and Q&A by Alejandro Amenabar, that would be something special indeed.
