Dead Man’s Shoes

Clint Eastwood does the rookie role and Jeff Bridges is ‘the kid’ in an awesome buddy flick that deals with a gang planning that one big bank job. Funny, exciting and sad, is a must see film for fans of Clint Eastwood (70s stylee), Jeff Bridges and that 70s colossus George Kennedy.

Watch it!

Abre los Ojos

Alejandro Amenabar at his best. A study in obsession and the nature of reality. Think ‘The Matrix’ and ‘Vertigo’. It does not aim to please and deals with it’s characters in a harsh light.

What it isn’t: A switch on and switch out kinda film

What it is: A fine psychological thriller about obsession and vanity.

The Mist

Don’t let the fact it’s based on Stephen King story put you off. This is a great backs against the wall, horror story involving a group of people trapped in a supermarket trying to survive a horrific onslaught from something in the mist.

What it isn’t: another shit ‘based on Stephen King story’ film

What it is: Good ol’ fashioned ‘up against it’ horror film.

Dead Man's Shoes

Only the Brits know how to make revenge flicks that can go as deep and black as this. Unflinchingly brutal. A real tour de force!

Southland Tales

Only managed to watch 30 mins of this. Expected better from Richard Kelly (director of Donnie Darko). Suffers from trying to condense pulp comic it is based on. I struggled to get to grips with the subject or any of the characters.

What it isn’t: Anywhere near the quality of previous effort Donnie Darko.

What it is: Painfully shit.

Audition

The brief synopsis at my local cinema was: ‘Slow moving love story soon descends into extreme shock horror’ I did not quite appreciate what this meant until I saw the film.

This was also the first I had come across a film by the prolific Takashi Miike. The film almost plays out like a game of 2 halves, this works to great effect as you are never quite ready for the turn of events that occur. It also has a non hollywood pacing to it which ensures that you never quite know how it’s all going to end.

Not: a date movie.

Is: a journey into a sick and twisted walk into a world of sadistic violence as well as the nature of love.
